This book is born from a love for that vast country called China and from the convergence of two perspectives on photography as a tool to transmit memory. In order to trace the genesis of this book, we must consider that it originates from a past that is both distant and recent. Essentially, this book comes from the experiences of two travelers. Italian photographer Stefano Mangini who traveled across, and has lived in China since 1997 and Luigi Piovano whose journey to China took place between 1900 and 1905, at the dawn of photography: an Italian military man who traveled with the international force vying for the liberation of the Legation Quarters from the Boxers’ siege.

The idea to combine the old with the new came almost by chance from photographer Stefano Mangini and enables comparisons that are charged with surprising similarities and striking contradictions. Many of the photographs seem to share a bond that prevails over time and space and present the viewer with an image of China unchanged—even if on the surface these images are often deceptive and present unforeseen turns with a sense of smoke and mirrors.

The texts and the photographs have been arranged in such a manner as to portray a faithful image of China in an attempt to reveal aspects of the country that are often ignored by the media. This is a true image of China, unknown and vital, introduced in a way that brings out aspects of tradition and of the modernism inherent in a civilization that is thousands of years old yet remains mostly a mystery to the west. China is here viewed as a multifaceted macrocosm in which past and present are intertwined and transformation is, paradoxically, the tie that binds the past to the future."

The Story of The Beginning.
After living in Shanghai for 5 years, Stefano, photographer and author, fulfills his dream: to ride back home, in Italy, by motorcycle. A trip of almost five months and 25,000 km through China, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, Greece and Italy.
Not just an adventure, but a journey through five of the most beautiful civilizations ever existed and through 4 of the main religious heritages of the world. All of this during a very sensitive historical time in the Central Asian region, a few months after the attack to the Twin Towers in NY.
In his book the author will make the readers live his experience, his feelings and gain a better understanding of the actual context through the adventures, the unusual encounters and different point of views of what has, and still today is happening in the countries he crossed.
Stefano explains: “The more my journey was evolving, the more I realized how it was becoming a testimony of a different perspective of the current events and of aspects often shadowed by the news of the ongoing wars. This journey also allowed me to witness the struggle of these cultures in entering the third millennium at the same pace as the more developed countries.”
